The SWR Meter: How It Works and How to Use It to Tune Your CB Antenna
An SWR meter measures how well your CB antenna is matched to your radio. To tune a CB antenna properly, install the meter inline between the radio and antenna coax, transmit on channel 1 and channel 40, and compare the two readings. If channel 1 is higher, lengthen the antenna. If channel 40 is higher, shorten it. The goal is SWR under 2.0 on both ends of the band, ideally under 1.5 in the middle (channel 20).

What an SWR meter does
An SWR meter is an inline test instrument that reads two things while you transmit: forward power (RF energy leaving the radio toward the antenna) and reflected power (energy bouncing back because the antenna isn't a perfect match). It converts the ratio of those two numbers into an SWR reading between 1.0 and infinity.
Without an SWR meter, you're guessing whether your antenna is tuned correctly. With one, you get an exact number that tells you which direction to adjust the antenna length.

Types of SWR meters
- Inline analog meters — the traditional choice. One or two analog needles, a FWD/REF switch, and a calibration knob. Inexpensive, reliable, and easy to read. This is what most CB installers use.
- Combination SWR/RF/power meters — analog inline meters that also read forward RF power in watts. Useful if you also want to verify your radio's transmit output.
- Digital SWR analyzers — battery-powered units that sweep frequencies and plot SWR across the whole band. Overkill for casual CB tuning but excellent for base-station installs and ham radio.
- Built-in SWR meters — some CB radios include an on-board SWR function. It works, but a dedicated external meter is usually more accurate.

How to hook up an SWR meter to a CB
- Turn the radio off before disconnecting anything.
- Unscrew the antenna coax PL-259 connector from the back of the CB radio.
- Screw that antenna coax into the meter port labeled ANT or Antenna.
- Take the jumper coax that came with the meter, connect one end to the meter port labeled Radio (sometimes TX or XMTR).
- Connect the other end of the jumper to the antenna connector on the back of the CB radio.
- Tighten every connection by hand until it stops turning easily. A loose PL-259 gives false SWR readings.
- Turn the radio on.
That's it — the meter is now inline between the radio and antenna and ready to read.
The proper tuning procedure

- Park in an open area — no buildings, power lines, or trees close to the antenna. Close all doors, hood, and trunk.
- Set the CB to channel 1.
- Set the SWR meter switch to FWD (forward).
- Key the microphone. While holding it, rotate the SET or CAL knob until the needle reaches the SET line.
- Still keying the microphone, flip the switch to REF (reflected) and read the SWR.
- Release the mic. Note the channel 1 reading.
- Switch to channel 40 and repeat: FWD, calibrate, REF, read.
- Compare the two readings.
How to interpret the reading
- Channel 1 higher than channel 40 → antenna is too short. Lengthen it.
- Channel 40 higher than channel 1 → antenna is too long. Shorten it.
- Both readings roughly equal and under 2.0 → you're tuned. If both are under 1.5, you're dialed in perfectly.
- Both readings above 3.0 → don't keep transmitting. Something else is wrong (bad coax, poor ground plane, faulty mount). See our CB installation fundamentals guide.
Make small physical adjustments to the antenna between readings. A quarter turn on a tunable tip, or 1/8 inch of trim on a fixed whip. Retest after every change.
Mistakes that produce bad SWR readings
- Skipping calibration. Every time you switch channels, re-calibrate in FWD before reading REF. The needle drifts.
- Loose PL-259 connectors. Hand-tight until it stops turning. Don't use pliers, but don't leave it half-threaded either.
- Tuning next to a garage or building. Metal within 10 feet of the antenna throws off the reading.
- Reading with the hood or trunk open. That changes the ground plane and gives a false reading you'll never match when you close it back up.
- Cheap non-CB SWR meter. Meters made for HF ham use may not be calibrated at 27 MHz. Stick with a CB-rated meter.
FAQ
Do I really need an SWR meter for a CB antenna?
Yes. Tuning without a meter is guessing. High SWR can damage your radio, so the meter is cheap insurance. See our SWR meter collection.
What SWR meter do you recommend for CB?

Which port does the antenna coax go into on the meter?
The port labeled ANT or Antenna. The jumper cable goes into the port labeled Radio, TX, or XMTR, and connects to the back of the CB.
Why does my SWR keep changing?
The most common causes: loose connectors, a moving antenna (not tight in the mount), or objects near the antenna (open trunk, nearby vehicles). Re-check all physical connections and retest in an open area.
Should I tune on channel 20 or channels 1 and 40?
Both matter. Channel 20 is the middle of the band, where you want SWR at its lowest. Channels 1 and 40 are the two ends — the difference between them tells you which direction to adjust the antenna length.
Can I use a ham radio SWR meter on my CB?
Only if it's rated for 27 MHz (the CB band). Most HF ham meters cover CB frequencies, but some VHF/UHF-only meters do not. Check the specs before buying.
