Antenna Stud Mounts for CB Radios
The antenna stud mount is one most critical part to any 2-way radio antenna installation, but what exactly is it and what are its various types? In this article, we’ll go over stud mounts and everything you need to know for your radio installation!
The stud mount is the median between the antenna and the coaxial cable, with the antenna going on the top side and the coaxial cable on the bottom side. Some mounts don’t require a stud mount but the vast majority do. When looking at your system, if it’s not a no-ground plane antenna system (NGP) then the stud mount or coaxial cable must be grounded. Keep in mind for vehicle installations, if it is being installed on a powder coating or any surface insulated from the chassis, to remove that coating to ensure full grounding with the chassis. This is to prevent any standing wave ratio (SWR) issues.
When considering what is right for you, most mounts are designed to fit an industry half inch hole (or 12.5 mm) but whatever mount you choose must match the type of coaxial cable you plan to use.
