CB in Cinema: Over the Top
The image of truckers being the modern day cowboy in the 70’s and 80’s was one of the key factors in the appeal of CB radio in pop culture. To do that, the theater was one of the best places to build that image up! In this iteration of CB in Cinema, we will take a look at Over the Top, a popular trucking/CB radio film, a brief overview, and its impact.
Directed by Menahem Golan in 1987, this film featured a-list star, Sylvester Stallone who played a long haul truck driver and occasional arm wrestler by the name of Lincoln Hawk. In the film, Hawk attempts to reconnect with his son Michael as he is normally away from military school. Michael’s grandfather eventually takes custody of Michael while Hawk attempts to start a new life by winning the World Armwrestling Championship.
This film revolves around trucking and arm wrestling with Stallone. It earned a total of $11.5 million in the US and Canada. It overall had a reputation of being a cheesy film with a lot of rock music and led to Stallone being nominated for worst actor, quite ironic!
