Choosing the Right Antenna

Choosing the Right Antenna

The antenna is your gateway into the greater radio world, and with such an important feature, it’s important to be educated on the many hidden rules regarding it! If you are looking to pick up an antenna for your radio system, here are a few rules to keep in mind.

When it comes to antennas, there are three primary categories to consider: top loaded, center loaded, and base loaded. The higher the load is or the higher it is mounted, the better it will be able to receive and transmit signals.

If mounting your antenna on a vehicle, the closer the antenna is to the center of the vehicle the better it will perform. To optimize performance on vehicles, at least 2/3 of the antenna should be above the roof line. If your vehicle doesn’t have a lot of ground plane, it is better to opt for a no ground plane antenna system.
