Having Trouble with Your CB Radio Installation (Part 1)?
Did you know that even if you purchase the best CB radio equipment on the market without proper installation the whole set-up will go to waste. Usually when people are having trouble with their CB radios, it’s due to the set-up.
With that said, we’ve created this two-part series in order to help you identify bad installations to troubleshoot any issues you might be having.
The basics of a good installation include your antenna, making sure the antenna is grounded properly, a solid mount, and a reliable piece of cable. One of our favorite brands of antenna is Skipshooter, these are great USA Made fiberglass antennas. If you are having any problems, you can likely localize your issue to one or more of these components. For example, if you have a very expensive radio but use flimsy, cheap antennas, all of that money might not show up like you thought it might. Make sure to make use of a SWR meter after positioning your mount and antenna the way you like it before the complete installation.
SWR Meters can be purchased separately or you could by a radio with one built in like the Stryker sr-655hpc or the Cobra 29ltd Classic. That way, you aren’t drilling holes and placing wires in all of these nooks and crannies only to realize you have to redo everything. We recommend using a c-clamp or a vise grip for temporary fastening before the final installation.
