Wilson CB Antenna Comparison Guide

Wilson makes the most recognizable center-load CB antennas on the road. Odds are, the shiny black antenna you keep seeing on pickups and semis is a Wilson. The problem: Wilson sells five distinct antennas across the same visual family and most sites don't tell you which one is right for your truck. This is the head-to-head. Wilson 1000 vs Wilson 5000 vs Wilson 2000 vs Little Wil vs the Wilson 5000 Trucker — what actually changes, what stays the same, and which one you should buy.

What all Wilson antennas have in common
Every antenna in Wilson's lineup uses the same core design philosophy: a heavy-duty center-loaded coil housed in a black plastic base, topped by a stainless steel whip. The coil sits about halfway up the antenna, which is the most efficient loading position for a physically shorter-than-102" antenna. This is why Wilsons consistently outperform base-loaded magnet mounts of the same length.
All Wilson mobile antennas are rated for the full 27 MHz CB band (channels 1-40) and tune via the whip length — you trim the stainless whip to lower SWR after installation. The magnet-mount versions use a 5" or 3" magnet base depending on the model, and every one of them ships with about 17 feet of coax and a PL-259 connector.
Wilson doesn't make bad antennas. The question isn't quality — it's picking the right one for your rig.
Wilson 1000
The Wilson 1000 magnet mount is the most-sold CB antenna in North America. It has been for over 20 years. There's a reason.

- Power handling: 3,000 watts (way beyond CB legal limits, so effectively unlimited for CB use)
- Coil position: Center-loaded
- Base: 5" magnet
- Best for: Pickups, Jeeps, SUVs, daily-driver mobile installs
The Wilson 1000 is what I recommend when a customer wants a single-antenna setup that just works. Slap it on the roof, tune the whip, done. Expect 5-10 miles of clear range in typical mobile-to-mobile conditions on flat terrain. If you can only own one CB antenna and you drive a personal vehicle, this is it.
Wilson 5000
The Wilson 5000 looks nearly identical to the 1000 but has a physically larger coil and a beefier magnet.
- Whip length: 62.5 inches (also available with 36" whip)
- Power handling: 5,000 watts (again, well beyond CB legal use — but the extra headroom translates to a couple percent better radiation efficiency)
- Coil position: Center-loaded, larger diameter
- Base: 5" magnet (heavier than the 1000)
- Best for: Same use cases as the 1000, but you want the theoretical best mobile performance
Real-world difference between Wilson 1000 and 5000: honestly, it's small. On the same vehicle in the same location tuned to the same SWR, the 5000 will squeak out maybe 5-10% better range on a good day. Most operators can't tell the difference in normal conversation. But the 5000's larger coil is more efficient across the whole 40-channel band, so if you talk on the fringes (channels 1-3 or 38-40), the 5000 holds its efficiency better than the 1000.
Wilson 1000 vs 5000 — my honest take: the 5000 is roughly $10 more. If the budget is there and you plan to keep the antenna for years, pick the 5000. If you're on the fence, the 1000 is 95% of the antenna for less money. There's no wrong answer here.
Wilson 2000 Trucker
The Wilson 2000 Trucker is Wilson's mirror-mount antenna designed specifically for semi trucks. Same electrical design as the 1000-series, but permanent-mount instead of magnet, and with a shaft that raises the antenna above the truck's mirror.
- Configuration: Mirror-mount, permanent
- Shaft options: 5" or 10" (10" clears taller mirror housings)
- Power handling: 3,000 watts
- Best for: Semi trucks, box trucks, RVs with existing mirror mounts
Where the 2000 Trucker shines is in matched pairs. A pair of Wilson 2000 Trucker dual mirror-mount combo kits on a semi is the standard professional install — the pair creates a directional radiation pattern that's stronger forward and rearward than a single antenna. If you drive a semi long-haul, run the pair. If you drive a single-mount truck, one 2000 Trucker still beats any magnet mount for a permanent professional install.
Wilson 5000 Trucker
The Wilson 5000 Trucker is to the 2000 Trucker what the 5000 magnet mount is to the 1000: same form factor, larger coil, higher power rating, slightly better efficiency.
- Configuration: Mirror-mount, permanent
- Power handling: 5,000 watts
- Best for: Semi trucks where you want the flagship performance
Same buying logic as the 1000 vs 5000 debate: about $10 more for a small but real efficiency gain. If you're already spending $170+ on a dual mirror-mount pair, the extra bump for the 5000 Trucker is worth it.
Little Wil
The Little Wil is Wilson's compact 36" magnet-mount antenna. Same center-loaded design, scaled down.
- Whip length: 36 inches total antenna height (about half the 1000)
- Power handling: 300 watts
- Base: Smaller 3" magnet
- Best for: Compact cars, motorcycles, occasional-use rigs, low-clearance garages
The Little Wil is a compromise antenna. You're trading maybe 30% of the range of a full 1000 for the ability to fit in a parking garage and to pack it away easily. If you park in a low-clearance space, or you run a compact car and don't want a 5-foot whip on the roof, this is the right pick. Don't buy the Little Wil expecting to reach out to a full-length 1000. It's the compromise-for-fit antenna.

How to tune your Wilson after install
Every Wilson antenna is trimmed via the top of the stainless steel whip. Here's the procedure:
- Install the antenna in its final mounting location. Route the coax to the radio.
- Set the antenna whip to the longest length allowed by the tuning ring at the top of the whip (usually stock length out of the box).
- Connect an SWR meter between the radio and antenna coax.
- Check SWR on channel 1 and channel 40. Note the readings.
- If SWR is higher on channel 40 than channel 1, the whip is too long — trim it in small (1/8") increments and re-check.
- If SWR is higher on channel 1 than channel 40, the whip is too short. You'll need to loosen the tuning ring and pull the whip up before re-tightening.
- Target SWR under 1.5:1 across all channels. Under 2.0:1 is acceptable.

Wilson vs Firestik — which brand should you pick?
This is the most common cross-brand question I get. Wilson (center-loaded coil) vs Firestik (top-loaded fiberglass) is a real design difference, not marketing. The short version:
- Wilson is more durable in wind and cold, easier to install as a magnet mount, and looks more like a "traditional" CB antenna. Better for personal vehicles.
- Firestik is more efficient per inch of length (top-loaded coils radiate slightly better), flexes rather than breaks on tree branches, and is standard on semi trucks. Better for commercial and off-road use.

What is the difference between Wilson 1000 and 5000?
The Wilson 5000 has a physically larger center-load coil and a higher power rating (5,000 watts vs 3,000 watts). Both use the same 62.5-inch whip and 5-inch magnet base. Do Wilson antennas come with coax cable?
Yes. All Wilson magnet-mount antennas ship with approximately 17 feet of coax cable and a PL-259 connector pre-attached. The mirror-mount trucker versions come with 18 feet of coax in most combo kits, though bare antennas can be purchased separately.
What size whip should I get — 62.5-inch or 36-inch?
Get the 62.5-inch whip if your vehicle has clearance in your normal parking spot. The full-length whip radiates more efficiently and gives you better range. The 36-inch whip only makes sense if you have low garage or drive-through clearance issues, because the shorter whip loses some efficiency.
