Batteries, charging and vehicle setup
For portable use, install nine compatible AA cells, such as 1.5V alkaline batteries or 1.2V NiMH rechargeable batteries, following the battery-compartment polarity markings. Do not use cells rated above 1.5V. Batteries are not required when the included cord powers the radio through its larger PWR jack.
Use the smaller CHG jack and charging tip only with NiMH rechargeable batteries. Do not charge alkaline, NiCd or lithium-ion cells through the radio, even if their packaging says rechargeable. Higher-capacity NiMH cells charge slowly in the radio; use their dedicated charging equipment when appropriate.
For vehicle use, pair the radio with a properly installed external CB antenna and the correct BNC adapter. Always attach a suitable antenna before transmitting.
Optional antenna accessories
- Cobra HA-TA telescoping antenna: Optional 27-inch BNC antenna for portable CB use; Cobra states that this telescoping antenna does not support NOAA weather reception.
- Workman 40-2610 antenna adapter: BNC male to SO-239 female adapter for connecting a CB antenna coax cable with a PL-259 plug.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Cobra HH 50 WX ST include batteries?
No. Portable operation requires nine compatible AA batteries, sold separately.
Can I use the radio without batteries in my vehicle?
Yes. The included 12V vehicle cord can power the radio through its PWR jack without batteries installed.
Can the HH 50 WX ST recharge batteries?
Yes, but the radio's charging connection is for NiMH batteries only. Use the charging tip with the CHG jack, and never use it to charge alkaline, NiCd or lithium-ion batteries.
Is the Cobra HH 50 WX ST an AM/FM CB radio?
The HH 50 WX ST uses AM for CB communication. It does not provide FM CB or SSB operation.
Does it receive NOAA weather broadcasts?
Yes. Its ten weather-channel selections include the seven NOAA weather frequencies. Press CB/WX to select weather mode and choose the clearest available broadcast.
Can it scan CB channels or monitor two channels?
Yes. Channel Scan checks all 40 CB channels, while Dual Watch alternates between two selected channels.
What antenna comes with the radio?
A removable rubber BNC antenna is included. A vehicle-mounted antenna and the adapter needed for a PL-259 coax connection are separate accessories.
What does SoundTracker do?
SoundTracker helps reduce noise and improve CB audio clarity. Its effect varies with the radio environment, so it is not a promise of noise-free reception.
