Plan your installation
Check the radio's physical dimensions, mounting clearance and power requirements before choosing an installation location. Allow room for the controls, microphone cable and rear connections; do not assume a bracket or truck cubby fits from the brand name alone.
Use an antenna system designed and adjusted for your operating frequencies. Inspect the mount, ground connection and coax, then check SWR before transmitting. A meter is a monitoring aid, not a substitute for proper antenna setup.

Frequently asked questions
Is the SS-686 a license-free CB radio?
No. It is a 10-meter amateur radio with AM and SSB modes, not a license-free 40-channel CB radio.
How much output does the SS-686 have?
Listed output is 20W RMS / up to 60W peak on AM and 40W on SSB. These are separate mode-specific figures.
Does it operate in FM?
The SS-686 is listed for AM and SSB operation, not FM.
What amateur license is needed?
For the listed 28.765–29.205 MHz operating range, U.S. voice operation requires General-class privileges or higher, or existing Advanced-class privileges. Technician voice privileges are limited to SSB in a different part of the 10-meter band. Operate only on frequencies and modes permitted by your license.
Is a microphone included?
Yes. A noise-canceling microphone is included with the radio.
Does the main listing include an antenna or external speaker?
No. The antenna system and external speaker are separate purchases; the truck-install combo includes an antenna, mount and coax.
Will it fit my existing truck cubby?
Measure the radio and mounting location and allow clearance for controls, brackets and cable connections. Do not assume fit from the truck or radio brand alone.
