Do I need the DRX-6560 mic if the Longhorn already comes with a chrome mic?
No — it's a choice, not a requirement. The stock Ranger SRA-198NC chrome noise-cancelling mic is fully functional. The DRX-6560 gives you a second mic with a different audio character (dynamic vs. electret) that many trucker-culture operators prefer on high-power SSB. This combo effectively ships you both, so you can pick between them situationally.
How much difference does the external speaker actually make?
On the Longhorn specifically, a lot. The radio's internal speaker fires downward through the top of the chassis, which is fine on a desktop but poor in a truck cab where road noise dominates. The DRX-9010 can be mounted near ear level and dramatically improves intelligibility on weak signals and while driving. If you spend hours on the radio, the upgrade is worth it.
Is this the right combo for me, or should I get the truck install combo instead?
This combo is the audio-focused upgrade — external speaker + upgraded mic.
