Do I Need a License to Operate a 10 Meter Radio?
Short answer: yes. To legally transmit on a 10 meter radio in the United States you need a valid FCC Amateur Radio license — at minimum a Technician class license — because the 10 meter band (28.000–29.700 MHz) is part of the Amateur Radio Service, not the Citizens Band Radio Service. This applies to every 10 meter radio we sell, including the Stryker SR-447HPC2, SR-497HPC, SR-655HPC+, and SR-955HPC+.

Why 10 meter is different from CB
- CB radio (26.965–27.405 MHz) operates under the FCC's Part 95 "license by rule" — no individual license is required as long as the radio is FCC-certified and used within the 4-watt AM / 12-watt PEP SSB limit. Reference: FCC CB Radio Service.
- 10 meter (28.000–29.700 MHz) is part of the Amateur Radio Service under FCC Part 97. Operating a transmitter on this band without a valid Amateur license is a federal violation, even if the equipment is FCC-certified for amateur use. Reference: FCC Amateur Radio Service.
Which license class do I need?
All three current FCC Amateur license classes grant privileges on 10 meters. The Technician class — the entry-level license — is enough to operate every 10 meter radio in our catalog.

How to get your Technician license
- Study. The Technician exam draws from a public question pool of ~400 questions maintained by the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators. Free study material: HamStudy.org, ARRL Ham Radio License Manual. Most operators pass after 8–15 hours of study.
- Find an exam session. Sessions are run by volunteer examiners nationwide. Search by zip code: ARRL Exam Search. Session fees are typically $10–15.
- Pass the exam. You need 26 of 35 correct (74%) to pass. You'll walk out with a Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE).
- Receive your call sign. The FCC issues your call sign within 3–10 business days via the Universal Licensing System (ULS). Reference: FCC ULS. There is a one-time $35 FCC license fee.
- Start transmitting. Your license is valid for 10 years and renewable free of charge.
What happens if I transmit without a license?
Operating an amateur radio transmitter — including any of the Stryker 10 meter radios we sell — without a valid FCC Amateur license is a violation of Part 97 and can result in fines, equipment forfeiture, and in serious repeat-offender cases criminal charges. The FCC has a public enforcement bureau and does act on complaints. Reference: FCC Enforcement Bureau.

Do I need a license for our radios specifically?
Yes, for every 10 meter radio we sell. Quick reference:
- Stryker SR-447HPC2: Requires FCC Amateur license (Technician minimum). AM/FM only, so Technician-class privileges cover it fully.
- Stryker SR-497HPC: Requires FCC Amateur license (Technician minimum). AM/FM only.
- Stryker SR-655HPC+: Requires FCC Amateur license (Technician minimum). AM/FM/PA plus NOAA weather receive (weather receive does not require a license — only transmit does).
- Stryker SR-955HPC+: Requires FCC Amateur license. Because it has SSB (USB/LSB) capability, a General class license unlocks the full SSB portion of 10 meters (28.300–29.700 MHz). Technician privileges are limited to 28.300–28.500 MHz for SSB voice.
Common questions
Can I listen to a 10 meter radio without a license?
Yes. Receive-only operation is unlicensed. You can legally scan and listen to any 10 meter transmission without a license. Only transmitting requires the amateur license.
Is the Technician exam hard?
No. It's a 35-question multiple-choice test drawn from a public question pool. Most first-time test takers pass with 8–15 hours of study using free resources like HamStudy.org.
How long does the license last?
10 years, renewable free of charge through the FCC's Universal Licensing System. The one-time FCC application fee is $35.
Do I need a Morse code test?
No. The FCC eliminated the Morse code requirement for all US amateur licenses in 2007.
Can I use a 10 meter radio as a CB radio?
No. A 10 meter radio is designed for the 28.000–29.700 MHz amateur band, not the 26.965–27.405 MHz CB band. They are separate FCC services with separate legal frameworks. What about export or "freeband" operation?
Operating a 10 meter radio on frequencies outside the 28.000–29.700 MHz amateur band — including the popular "freeband" segment around 27.4–28.0 MHz — is illegal in the United States regardless of license class. Reference: FCC Amateur Radio Service.
