President ACMD901 Dual Cooling Fan Kit for the President Washington

Two genuine President ACMD901 fan kits for the President Washington 10 meter radio — the maximum-cooling configuration recommended by President Electronics for high-duty-cycle operation. The Washington was designed with two internal fan headers on the main board specifically to support a dual-fan setup, and this two-pack lets you build it out in a single order.

Both fans mount to the Washington's rear heatsink and are controlled automatically by the radio's APM (Automatic Power Management) system. Temperature-based on/off, dual airflow, and near-silent operation when the radio is idling. Comes with everything you need to install both fans and restore your factory warranty stickers.

Who this dual kit is for

  • High-duty-cycle SSB and repeater operators. Long DX sessions, active 10m repeater nets, and extended sideband work generate real heat inside the chassis. Dual fans keep the finals cool through it all.
  • Base station operators. A permanent home base install with 13.8V power supply and hours of daily on-air time benefits significantly from the full two-fan cooling capacity the Washington was engineered for.
  • Truckers and mobile operators in hot climates. A cab that sees 100°F+ interior temperatures in summer will run cooler with dual airflow across the heatsink.
  • Operators who want the setup done right the first time. If you're already opening the case, installing two fans takes barely longer than installing one — and you get double the airflow and the OEM-designed maximum cooling.

What's in the box

  • 2 × President ACMD901 40 mm cooling fans
  • 2 × metal protective grilles
  • 8 × mounting screws
  • 4 × replacement warranty stickers
  • Installation instructions for both fans

Why dual fans

The Washington has two internal fan headers because President Electronics engineered the radio to accept two ACMD901 units for maximum cooling capacity. A single fan is a real improvement over the bare heatsink and covers most everyday use, but dual fans are the setup the manufacturer's own documentation lists when they say "2 fans are required" for maximum cooling.

Dual fans deliver:

  • Higher heatsink airflow across the entire finals section, not just one side.
  • Lower peak internal temperatures during extended SSB, FM, or repeater duty.
  • More power headroom under APM. If the chassis stays cooler, APM never has to step transmit power down.
  • Longer life for the RF finals. Heat is the #1 killer of MOSFET output stages; two fans meaningfully extends their operating life.

How it works

Both fans mount to the Washington's rear heatsink using the four included screws per fan and their protective grilles. Each fan's 2-pin connector plugs into its own dedicated header on the Washington main circuit board — no soldering, no cutting, no wire splicing. Wires tuck neatly into the case grooves so nothing sits loose.

Once installed, the radio's APM (Automatic Power Management) circuit runs both fans automatically based on internal temperature. Under low load, both fans stay off. As the chassis warms, APM spins the fans up together. If the radio still runs hotter than APM prefers, it will also gently reduce transmit power to keep the finals in spec.

Installation

Dual-fan installation takes most operators 30-45 minutes with basic hand tools. In outline:

  1. Disconnect the Washington from power.
  2. Remove the top case (side and rear screws). The original warranty stickers will break — this is expected. Four replacement stickers are included in the kit.
  3. Locate both fan headers on the main circuit board.
  4. Mount each fan to the rear heatsink using the four screws and protective grille supplied per fan.
  5. Route each fan's wire pair into a case groove and plug the 2-pin connectors into their respective headers.
  6. Reinstall the case and apply the four replacement warranty stickers over the original locations.

Full step-by-step instructions come with each fan.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Washington have two internal fan headers?

Because it was engineered for a dual-fan cooling setup from the factory. President Electronics designed the radio to accept up to two ACMD901 fans on the rear heatsink and controls both automatically through the APM system. The single-fan kit is a starter configuration; the two-fan setup is the maximum cooling the radio was designed for.

Do I really need two fans or is one enough?

One fan is enough for most operators — trucker use, moderate SSB, mixed-mode operation. Two fans are the recommended setup if you run high-duty-cycle SSB DX sessions, long repeater nets, extended base station use, or operate in a hot climate. Two fans also protect your finals better long-term by keeping peak internal temperatures lower.

Is the dual fan kit noticeably louder than one fan?

Only marginally. Both fans run under APM control and only spin up when the chassis is warm. When the fans are engaged, two 40 mm fans produce slightly more airflow noise than one — but they also cool the chassis faster and cycle off sooner, so the total on-time is often less than a single fan working harder alone.

Will installing two fans void my President warranty?

No. The ACMD901 is a factory-approved accessory. Each kit includes two replacement warranty stickers (four total in the two-pack) specifically so you can restore the warranty seals after installation.

Can I install these myself?

Most operators install the dual kit themselves in 30-45 minutes with basic hand tools. The 2-pin connectors are plug-and-play — no soldering, no splicing. Full instructions are included with each fan.

Are these different from the single-fan kit, or identical parts?

Identical parts. Each ACMD901 in the two-pack is the same OEM President fan kit sold in our single-fan listing — you just receive two of them together, packaged for the dual-fan setup the Washington was engineered for.

Can I run these on a Washington-100 or only the older 80W Washington?

Both. President Electronics kept the same chassis, heatsink mounting pattern, and internal fan header layout across the older 80W Washington and the current 100W Washington, so the ACMD901 dual kit is a universal fit across every version of the radio.
