The Cobra 29 LTD Chrome AM/FM CB Radio is the chrome-plated professional edition of Cobra's iconic 29 LTD — the classic full-size dash-mount CB that's been the go-to trucker radio for four decades. This is the newest version with dual-mode AM and FM capability across all 40 CB channels, backed by a two-year manufacturer's warranty and a mirror-polished chrome faceplate that stands out in any cab.

Same chassis as the standard Cobra 29 LTD Classic AM/FM, just dressed for show — if you want the same reliable radio with chrome trim, this is your pick.

Who the Chrome Pro Is For

The Cobra 29 LTD Chrome AM/FM is aimed at:

  • Truckers who want a professional-looking chrome-faceplate CB that fits the traditional CB radio slot in Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Volvo, Mack, and International cabs — same footprint as any other Cobra 29 LTD.
  • Show truck operators and enthusiasts who care about interior aesthetics as much as function — the polished chrome trim matches chrome bezels, chrome mic hangers, and chrome accessory clusters.
  • CB users upgrading from AM-only to the new FCC-approved dual-mode AM/FM format — the Chrome Pro is fully backwards-compatible with existing AM-only radios and existing antennas.

Why We Like the Chrome Pro

The 29 LTD platform has been in continuous production since the early 1980s, and Cobra keeps refining it. The Chrome Pro version is the same rugged full-size chassis truckers have trusted for decades, updated with the 2021 FCC-approved dual-mode AM/FM capability and dressed with mirror-polished chrome. FM delivers noticeably cleaner audio when you're running near diesel engines, alternators, and ignition noise — cutting through where AM traditionally struggles. If you already run a Cobra 29 LTD Classic and want the chrome look, or you're building a show-quality install, this is a straightforward upgrade with zero learning curve.

Recommended Antennas for the Chrome Pro

The Chrome Pro uses a standard SO-239 antenna jack and works with any properly tuned 50-ohm antenna for the 27 MHz Citizens Band. Our top antenna pairings:

  • President Maryland RW Radial Whip — 5/8-wave chrome-tipped whip, easy-tune SWR set rings so no cutting required, 500W PEP rated, 10-year warranty. Chrome accent matches the Chrome Pro nicely.
  • Stryker SR-A10 — silver-plated copper coil, 10,000W rated, ideal if you plan to upgrade to a 10-meter amateur radio later.
  • Full CB antenna collection — 102" whips, magnetic mounts, fiberglass, dual-truck, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Chrome Pro and the standard Cobra 29 LTD Classic?
The internals are identical — same board, same AM/FM dual-mode capability, same 40 channels, same 4W output. The Chrome Pro has a mirror-polished chrome faceplate and chrome trim instead of the Classic's black finish. Both take the same power cord, mic, mounting bracket, and antenna. Pick the Chrome Pro if you want the show-truck aesthetic; pick the Classic at $139.95 if you don't need the chrome.

Do I need a license to use the Chrome Pro?
No. This is a CB (Citizens Band) radio operating on 27 MHz, which is license-free in the United States. Anyone can transmit — no FCC exam required. That's different from 10-meter amateur radios like the President Richard II, which do require an amateur license.

Does the Chrome Pro come peaked and tuned?
No — the Chrome Pro ships stock from Cobra with factory alignment. If you want peak-and-tune alignment, add the optional Pro Tune and Alignment service at checkout for $50. Our tech performs the work in-house before your radio ships.

What antenna works best with the Chrome Pro?
Any properly tuned 50-ohm CB antenna cut for 27 MHz will work. Our top pick for aesthetic match is the President Maryland RW Radial Whip — chrome-tipped, easy-tune SWR rings, no cutting required. For traditional trucker looks, a 102" stainless-steel whip like the Hustler IC56 is a classic pairing (see the Chrome Pro combo).

Is the AM/FM capability worth the upgrade over an older AM-only radio?
For most drivers, yes. FM has significantly cleaner audio in electrically noisy environments — near diesel engines, alternators, and ignition systems. The 2021 FCC rule change added FM to CB while keeping full backwards compatibility with older AM-only radios, so you can still talk to any classic CB out there. You get all the benefits of FM with none of the compatibility trade-offs.

Does the Chrome Pro fit standard DIN dash cutouts?
No — it's a full-size traditional CB radio, roughly 6.3" wide × 2.5" tall × ~9" deep. It fits the traditional CB radio slot in most Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Volvo, Mack, and International trucks, plus most older Ford, Chevy, and Dodge pickups with under-dash mounting brackets. It will not fit a single-DIN car head-unit slot without a custom bracket.

What's included with the Chrome Pro?
The box includes the Chrome Pro transceiver, a 4-pin dynamic microphone, a fused DC power cord, a mounting bracket with hardware, a microphone hanger clip, and the owner's manual. You will need to supply your own antenna, coax cable, and antenna mount separately (or purchase the Chrome Pro combo which includes all three).

Can I use the Chrome Pro as a base station?
Yes, with a properly regulated 13.8V DC power supply rated for at least 4 amps continuous, plus a base-station CB antenna (a vertical or dipole cut for 27 MHz). Contact us if you want a base-station build recommendation.

Does the Chrome Pro have SSB (single-sideband)?
No. The Chrome Pro is an AM/FM CB radio only — no SSB. If you need SSB capability for CB, look at higher-end SSB CB radios in our full CB collection.

Is the Pro Tune and Alignment service worth it?
For most CB users running the Chrome Pro at stock 4W output, the factory alignment is fine. If you want the cleanest AM/FM modulation possible, want SWR verified on your specific antenna setup before install, or you're building a show-quality truck install, the $50 Pro Tune and Alignment is a smart add-on. It's done in-house by our tech, not shipped out.

Warranty and FCC Compliance

The Chrome Pro carries a 2-year manufacturer's warranty from Cobra Electronics. It is FCC Type-Accepted for CB (27 MHz Citizens Band) use in the United States, meaning it's license-free and legal to transmit on out of the box. Buyers are responsible for compliance with all FCC rules including maximum-power limits (4W AM / 4W FM). Use only with a properly tuned 50-ohm antenna system.
